Now Place is an artist-run multilingual bookstore and RISO print studio rooted in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
We treat publishing as everyday practice, and the shop floor as a community stage — for conversations, prints, books, zines, and emerging voices from the Asian diaspora.
This role helps hold the daily rhythm, community energy, and print ecosystem of the space

✧ Who we are looking for
We’re looking for someone who believes culture is built from the ground up, and feels the pulse of the streets more than the polish of institutions.
This role is for someone who:
-
Wants to work close to independent publishing, print machines, community archives, and subcultural networks

Shows up reliably and communicates clearly
-
Moves with a DIY mindset and grassroots work means rolling up sleeves: opening the door, running the register, carrying boxes, prepping prints, talking to strangers who might change everything

Can act independently and responsibly, without needing titles or micromanagement

Enjoys third spaces because they are alternative worlds, not stepping stones to corporate ones

Believes art should be accessible, messy, loud, niche, personal, resistant, community-rooted, self-published, self-distributed
-
Wants hands-on experience with print, zines, art books, and RISO production
✧ What You’ll Do
Store Operations
-
Open/close the shop using simple internal SOP
-
Handle sales, checkout, and customer support
-
Maintain inventory organization and daily logs
-
Help hold the shop’s atmosphere and visitor flow
Print Studio Support

Log RISO printing, paper, and studio usage
-
Learn + assist the RISO printing process
-
Support small-run print and publication prep
-
Help package, label, and prepare printed goods
Community + Front Stage Presence
-
Welcome visitors, artists, and collaborators
-
Assist with event setup and onsite programming
-
Support artist inquiries and community intake
-
Optional: co-design one print or poster per month
-
Optional: support outreach cycles when inspired

✧ What You’ll Get

Paid hours + real operations ownership (Starting pay is $18/hr. We are presently looking for 2 days per week worth of staffing, which could be one person or a few people “part-time.")

Creative proximity to independent publishing

RISO printing access for personal work (weekly allowance or studio hours)

1 print or micro-zine featured on Now Place Contributors Wall after 1 month

Participation in book fairs, workshops, and community programming as crew
